Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining

Yesterday the dark cloud that loomed over our home was the fact that the boys did not nap nearly as long as they needed to or as long as I needed them to.  The silver lining is that we were actually able to make it to the 4:00 P.M. story time at the library because Sam wasn't napping right through it!  And, to make that silver lining a little shinier, it was the Christmas Party Storytime!  With, get this, not only Santa but Mrs. Claus too!

The boys enjoyed listening to some stories read by one of their favorite librarians, Mr. John, then joined another favorite librarian, Robin, to do some holiday crafts.  They both made pipe cleaner wreath ornaments decorated with beads.  They also got to decorate shortbread cookies with frosting and candies to make cookie wreaths.  Ben tasted his cookie and Sam devoured his!

After cookies we headed out to meet the jolliest elf in the world and his significant other.  The boys let go of the uncertainty they've had in the past when it's been time to sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they want for Christmas.  Sam eagerly went first and told Santa he wanted cheese and crackers - something Santa said he had never heard before as a gift request.  Then Ben took his turn and said he'd like a train set (funny that we already have one) and a teddy bear named Benny (funny that he has a Build-A-Bear puppy named Benny).  It's also funny that apparently Ben told Mrs. Claus about the teddy bear when she visited his preschool last week but we just heard about the bear a day or two ago.

Mrs. Claus was as kind and charming as St. Nick and the boys were sent away with Christmas wishes and mini candy canes.

Listening intently to Mr. John.

If only they were this loving with each other all the time.

Christmas Spirit

We've already attended a variety of holiday parties and programs so the snowflake sweaters from Nan and Teddy have come in very handy as have the many boxes that have been arriving containing gifts
 as you can see.

Though Ben may be outgrowing the MegaBlocks as his interest in LEGOS grows, he still just barely fits in the MegaBlock wagon.  He was even able to use his hands to move the wheels much like a wheelchair.

The boys posing with our little artificial tree.  Sam happens to be wearing the jammies that Ben got for Christmas the year Sam was born.  Notice the precariously perched elf at the top of the tree....his name is Nicholas and he is our family's "Elf on the Shelf." http://www.elfontheshelf.com/

Cheese balls!

A few bits of humor from the boys....

Ben sings, "Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.  Oh what fun it is to ride in a most convienient way, hey!"

Sam informs us that Santa says, "Yo Ho Ho!"

When Ben and Sam were playing with a little Santa toy the conversation went something like this....
Ben: "Sam, tell Santa what you want for Christmas."
Sam (leaning very close to Santa and speaking very loudly and clearly): "Cheese and crackers!"
Ben: "No, Sam!  You're supposed to ask Santa for a toy!"
Sam (on the verge of tears): "I'm hungry."

Sam's 2nd Birthday!

Nearly two weeks have passed since Sam's 2nd birthday on December 8th.  We've been busy since then but the day is still fresh in my mind.
The first thing Sam said when he woke up on his birthday (after Ben said Happy Birthday to him) was, "It's my birthday!  I get cake!"

Sam with a new Skippyjon Jones book and toy from Ben.

Bug puppets from Grandma and Grandpa which promptly were flown around the house and landed on Mommy's back.

Skippyjon and the Big Bones from Nan and Teddy!

LEGOS!!! from Auntie Beth, Uncle Pete and Kayla.

Checking out the LEGO loader and dump truck after waiting very patiently
for Mommy to put them together (about 35 minutes of being patient).

The loader right before it was dismantled for the first time.

Sam's cake which we decorated while he was napping (the heart-shaped pan was chosen by Ben).

Sam's birthday dinner request: homemade cheese pizza!

PIZZA!

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you....

...Happy Birthday, dear Sam....

...Happy Birthday to you!

The Real Reason

Because life with two little boys, a husband, book club, yoga classes, and my role as president of a non-profit wasn't enough I decided to take on the role of small business owner too.

After almost three months of planning, licensing, testing, and outfitting a professional kitchen I kicked off my first day as a caterer in my new business Meals By Maggie.  You can read all about it on that website/blog http://www.mealsbymaggie.com/

Needless to say, my blogging has suffered as has my already pitiful housekeeping.

But, I am happy.

Thanksgiving Recap

Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday because of the focus on food.  What could be better for a girl who loves to be in the kitchen and loves the comfort food of Thanksgiving day?

On Saturday afternoon, November 21st, our good friend Sue took us to the Reno airport and helped us unload and check the hundreds of pounds of kids and gear that we needed for our trip to Seattle to meet up with Dave and Sarah (AKA Teddy and Nan) and Chris, Emily and their kids for the Thanksgiving holiday. We ended up checking two suitcases and two full size car seats and carrying on three backpacks, our coats and a stroller for Sam. The flight was on a smaller turbo-prop plane and was rather uneventful for the two hours in the air. We arrived on time in Seattle and were met by Dave and Chris at the airport. Our plan was to spend two nights in Bellevue at Chris and Emily's then drive three hours to the coast west of Tacoma to spend the remainder of the week in a rental house in Moclips, WA.

We arrived after the boys' normal bedtime and ended up letting them play way too long before trying to get them settled for the night.  Ben was to sleep in Camille's room and Sam was in Harry's crib with us in a guest bed in the same room.  The boys went down without a fuss but Sam ended up being pretty restless all night which in turn meant Brian and I got very little sleep.  Luckily, we didn't have anything planned for Sunday until the late afternoon so we could lounge around the house and let the boys play.  Ben and Sam loved playing with their cousins and their cousins' toys.  And when two babysitters arrived to watch the FIVE kids while the adults went into the city, there was no fuss.

Our evening out was to Qwest Field in Seattle for the Major League Soccer Championship game between Real Salt Lake and the Los Angeles Galaxy (team of soccer hunk David Beckham).  We took the bus into the city to avoid parking issues and wandered through booths of sponsors outside the stadium where we also heard a couple of songs by Third Eye Blind.  Another huge bonus was that after having rain fall all night Saturday, and all day Sunday it broke for the evening.

I can honestly say that the only soccer I had watched previously was played by kids and was rather boring to watch at times.  And I can honestly say that after going to one of the big games of the year for professional soccer, I am hooked!  The intensity of the crowd was amazing and the game was a nail-biter going down to overtime and penalty kicks!

It was also nice to come home to sleeping kids, though apparently Ben made the sitters really earn their pay by not falling asleep until thirty minutes prior to us getting home.

The next morning, Monday, we packed suitcases, boxes, and food and set out on the three-hour drive to the coast.  We were literally packed like sardines in the mini van that Brian's parents rented.  The boys napped most of the way and again we traveled in rain.  It was getting dark by the time we reached the house but it was a welcome sight for cramped legs and hungry tummies.

The boys immediately picked their room, a bunk room off the living room, and began playing while I started on black bean burgers for dinner.  After dinner the Bellevue Browders arrived.

Despite the rain, we spent lots of time taking walks and going to the beach.  We seemed to be decked out in raincoats and boots for at least a couple of hours every day.  The kids loved exploring the beach and playing together in the bunk room.  A few minor disagreements occurred but overall the kids got along incredibly well despite the age range of 7 1/2 to 19 months.  All the kids loved reading the new books Nan brought for them especially, "Skippyjon Jones Lost in Spice."

We decided to have our Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday instead of Thursday so we could enjoy the leftovers before returning to Seattle on Friday.  The food was wonderful.  Sam loved Aunt Emily's pumpkin pie.

Whether it was the cold, rainy weather or a bug picked up at school or traveling, it seemed that the kids were all starting to show signs of colds during the week.  By Thursday morning Ben was vomiting and generally uncomfortable, luckily by the end of the day he seemed more like himself but worn out.  By 3:00 A.M. on Friday I was the one vomiting and spent nearly 18 hours in hell, including the the three-hour drive inland.  I can't remember the last time I felt so crummy and was little to no help when it came to packing and cleaning the house before we departed.  In eighteen hours I wasn't even able to keep water down.

We spent Friday night at a hotel in Renton with Dave and Sarah so we could make our 7:50 A.M. flight.  They were wonderful with the boys in my compromised state and I wish I could say we all got a great night's sleep but we didn't.  Everyone was either coughing or restless and by the time we needed to get up and head toward the airport we were all exhausted.  Luckily, I was able to drink some water during the night and keep it down so I considered myself to be on the mend.

We had no problems with security at the airport or flight delays and the boys were very well-behaved on the plane.  We got into Reno and Sue picked us up and brought us home.  We found out later that nearly everyone in the family ended up being sick in some way.   Holidays are always lots of work - travel, kids, etc. but throw in sickness and it's a whole new ball game.  Hopefully Christmas will be less eventful.

I'll post photos once I get them on the computer.

LEGO Mania!

"Look Mom, I made a horse!"

Back in October we made a trip to Grandma and Grandpa's home in Happy Camp.  Visiting and playing with the toys at Grandma and Grandpa's is always exciting but the one thing the boys spent hours playing was LEGOS.  At the end of our stay Grandma let the boys bring home the bucket of the building bricks and they've been a favorite ever since.  Initially Ben would have an idea for something to build but would ask for help when he couldn't quite figure it out.  After less than two months, Ben is creating some really great things.  Brian and I both loved playing with LEGOS as kids and often find ourselves completely swept up in building projects with the boys.
A trip to Target in Reno last week yielded two more small sets of the basic building sets for the boys for Christmas.  Unfortunately, with the way the boys are creating and playing it seems like the 400 new pieces won't go very far.  I guess it's time to hit eBay and Craigslist and see what else we can find.

Ben's herd of horses.

The wild animals....hippo, elephant and giraffe.

A puppy and a kitty.

Sam's carwash...built by Mommy, accessorized by Sam.

Ben's firestation complete with vehicles - some assistance from Mom and Dad but completely Ben's idea.

Do You Know the Muffin Man?

Ben holding his own muffin tin.

This morning when Ben woke up he requested that we make pumpkin muffins for breakfast.  With Sam still sleeping I figured I could get at least one batch made and in the oven with little trouble.  Of course, I thought that if I was going to make one batch, I should just double it and have some muffins to put in the freezer for our next refreshment day at church.  Bad idea.....what normally takes less than 30 mintues from start to finish ended up being more than an hour!

But the end result was worth it (except for the sinkful of muffin tins).  Here are a few of our Pumpkin Muffins with Hazelnut Streusel topping.

Wine, Chocolate and Roses

After hearing for the past four years what an amazing event the Tahoe Women's Services puts on with their Wine and Chocolate Festival I decided this was the year to check it out.  It also happens to be the first year since moving here that I haven't been pregnant or breastfeeding during the festival and could thus DRINK WINE!

It also helps that through my community volunteering I have come to know some of the people involved in the two organizations collaborating on this year's festival, Project MANA and Tahoe Women's Services, and wanted to show my support not only to the organization but to my friends.  When I first mentioned to Brian that I was interested in attending the event he had a rather luke warm response....he's not a wine drinker and usually doesn't divulge in sweets so the entire premise of the event wasn't all that appealing to him.  I then made a couple of emails and my good friend, Steph, took me up on the offer of a girl's night out and offered to be my designated driver as she is pregnant and due in May 2010.

Steph arrived in the late afternoon and we had some time to visit and get all dressed up before heading out, leaving the boys with Daddy for bedtime.  I was happy to be able to squeeze into a cocktail dress I hadn't worn in 5 years!  Yes, a dress from my pre-kid days!

We got to the event shortly after it started and were immediately confused with the set-up of the venue.  I had never been to the North Lake Tahoe Convention Center in Kings Beach before so I wasn't familiar with the layout of the building and the arrangement of the chocolate and wine vendors and the appetizers was not easy to see with the crowds of people milling around.  It appeared that there were several nice silent auction items but both Steph and I agreed that there wasn't anything we couldn't live without.  We enjoyed the various chocolates offered by ten different chocolatiers and I tried just a few wines.  My personal favorite of the chocolate items I tried was made by the chef at a restaurant here in Incilne called Frederick's.  It was a warm chocolate sourdough waffle with chocolate sauce, whipped cream and apple-cinnamon caviar.....unbelievable!  Overall, I didn't really see why people have made such a huge deal about this event - unless they are all about getting wasted on wine and gorging themselves on rich chocolates.  At first that sounded good to me too but it was annoying that there wasn't even anywhere to sit down and relax and visit while enjoying the wine and chocolate - especially for my pregnant friend!

The band that was playing only added to the chaos by making it even harder to converse with people.  I saw many people that I knew and realized that this is basically a huge social networking event more than anything else.  The event was scheduled to run from seven o'clock to ten o'clock but by nine Steph and I were happy to retrieve our things from the coat check and enjoy the rest of the evening at home in our jammies.  On our way out the door, a very sweet elderly gentleman handed each of us a rose bud and thanked us for coming.

Brian was surprised to see us home so early and I immediately told him that rather than going again in future years we'll use that money to go to something more to our liking.  The best thing about the evening was getting to spend time with Steph and having her here in the morning to hang out some more before going home.  The boys loved playing with Auntie Steph and were sad to see her go but Ben is very excited that soon there will be a new baby and Julianna will be a big sister!

A Slice of Heaven

After making this for a gathering of several friends I was encouraged to share the recipe.  It's a little more labor intensive than I usually like but well worth it!

Chocolate Nut Torte with Chocolate Ganache and Mocha Whipped Cream

*Make the whipped topping first and let it cool while making the cake.

Mocha Whipped Cream:
1/3 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup strong coffee
1 ounce dark or semisweet baking chocolate
1 Tablespoon butter
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup whipping cream, whipped

In a saucepan, mix sugar and cornstarch and gradually stir in coffee and chocolate.  Cook, stirring constantly until mixture thickens and boils.  Boil one minute.  Blend in butter and vanilla.  When thoroughly cool, fold in the whipped cream.  Refrigerate until ready to use.

Chocolate Nut Torte:
6 eggs
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup flour
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup finely ground walnuts
1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs

Grease 2 (9-inch) cake pans.  Line with wax paper and grease.
Beat eggs and sugar with electric mixer until thick and pale.  Add flour, cocoa, and baking powder and beat again until smooth.  Mix nuts with bread crumbs then add to egg mixture - mix gently.  Spoon batter into prepared cake pans - divide evenly.  Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees until a slight imprint remains.  Cool in pans 10 minutes then invert onto rack, peel off paper and cool completely.

Chocolate Ganache:
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
6 ounces semi-sweet or dark chocolate, chopped

Heat cream in a small saucepan just until boiling, remove from heat and stir in chocolate until smooth.  Let cool 15 minutes then frost the bottom layer of the torte, place top layer on bottom, and frost the top (you may leave sides unfrosted).
Refrigerate torte until ganache hardens slightly, slice, then serve with a dollop of mocha cream on top.
Serves 10-16.
